Among the criteria for membership, the applicant must successfully complete the Qualifying Examination for Professional Counselling Practice, and a psychological test for self awareness.
The Qualifying Examination is a demonstration of the applicant's understanding of essential knowledge covering the following areas:
1. Clinical Assessment, Crisis Intervention, Suicide Assessment and Prevention
2. The Counselling Process and Therapeutic Interventions
3. Loss and Grief Counselling
4. Communication and Conflict Resolution Skills
5. Working Knowledge of the DSM-IV
6. Professional Ethical Standards and Proof of Legal Liability Insurance
7. Fee Assessment, Professional Accountability, and Referral
8. Initial Client Contact, Maintaining and Determining the Length of Counselling, Evaluation of Progress, and Closure
9. Awareness of one's own significant conflicts and losses
Psychological Testing is a self awareness questionaire required to determine areas of personal growth and development.
The Qualifying Examination consists of 200 multiple-choice questions based on the nine identified knowledge areas. The Qualifying Examination is an open-book exam and is accompanied with a list of resources. The Qualifying Examination takes approximately 5 hours to complete; however, there is a ten day permitted time-frame to write the Qualifying Examination. Psychological testing is a self awareness questionnaire based on a 5 Factor Model of Personality, which usually takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.
All examination results remain confidential between the CPCA Board of Directors and the applicant. The exams are marked by Libby Stowers, PhD who provides any feedback or recommendations to the applicant.
To order the Qualifying Examination, please submit $450 to the CPCA. You may do this via cheque or money order payable to the CPCA, by phoning the office with a credit card number, or by paying via Paypal on the CPCA website.
