Jim G. Wright - National President |
|
James G. Wright, R.P.C., C.Ht., the National President of the Canadian Professional Counsellors Association, a Registered Professional Counsellor, Master Practitioner in Counselling Psychology, and Founder of Life Style Counselling Service.
He was raised on a farm in North Eastern Saskatchewan, completed his secondary education, and attended the University of Saskatchewan in 1966. Jim then served 8.5 years in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and then completed Criminology studies at the University of B.C. In 1974 Jim entered the private sector as a building contractor, and quickly realized that many employees and families in his own and other businesses had problems with alcohol and drugs. Government agencies, although well intended, were unable to meet all the needs of those families suffering. Jim returned to College and completed two years at Counsellor's Training Institute in Vancouver, plus two years of clinical supervision. Since 1989 Jim operated a successful private practice working with over 1200 employees and their families throughout the Okanagan Valley.
Jim was one of the founders of the Canadian Professional Counsellors Association when it was established as a Provincial Society in 1990. After 5 years served as a Director, Jim was elected to the President's role. Recognizing the need for members from across Canada to feel more included, Jim pursued the goal to incorporate the CPCA as a National Non-Profit Association, which took place in 2004. Jim now devotes much energy and time carrying out the mandate and vision of the CPCA, in order for counsellors in Canada to be accredited based on core competencies rather than a particular education type.
